Mandatory Coaching Requirements:
Borough ordinance and Recreation and Parks Department rule require the following mandatory requirements be met before you start coaching:
  1. Photo ID card presented.
  2. Complete the Coaches Code of Conduct Form.
  3. Complete a Criminal Background Check Form to be done by the Franklin Lakes Recreation and Parks Department.
  4. Coaches and volunteers attend and satisfactorily complete a three hour nationally recognized training clinic (Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y clinic).
  5. View a 14 minute online video entitled “Rights and Duties of an Employee in Local Government. Please click here here for instructions on accessing the online video.
Criminal History Background Check Process:
Every adult volunteer in Franklin Lakes who wishes to work with minors must submit to a Criminal History Background Check.

There will be at least two Coaches Nights per season when volunteers may come and get their background check done. Volunteers will be notified by the Recreation Department when the Coaches Nights will take place.

Volunteers are asked to come to the Recreation Center anytime between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. You will be asked to provide valid ID (driver’s license, passport, and a social security card). If you do not have the proper ID, you cannot complete the background check.

When you get to the Recreation Center, Instant Verification will be there. You will be asked to fill out a short release form and show your valid ID. Representatives from Instant Verification will then take your photo.

In about a week, you will receive notification from the Recreation Department that you have either been cleared or denied to be a coach based on the results of your background check.

If you have been cleared, you will receive instructions on when and where to pick up your Coaches ID card. You will be required to wear this card at all times when coaching in Franklin Lakes. There are no exceptions!

If you have been denied, you have 30 days to contact Instant Verification for a free copy of your Criminal History Background Check.  At this time, Instant Verification will also explain the appeal process if necessary.

Coaches ID cards are valid for two years.
