Borough Clerk's Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

If I want to speak to the Mayor and Council in person, how do I get on the agenda?

During both Work Session and Regular Meetings, there is a Time for Public Comment. This period, which is near the beginning of the meeting, allows residents time to express opinions, raise issues, and provide information to elected officials. Comments presented during this segment should be on municipality-related issues and not ordinances that are scheduled for a public hearing on the same evening's agenda (there will be a separate opportunity for public comment for an ordinance with a public hearing).

How often is there a meeting of the Mayor and Council?

There is a Work Session and Regular Session of the Mayor & Council on the first and third Tuesday of the month. Meetings start at 7:30 pm. Work Sessions are held in the Conference Room and Regular Meetings are held in the Council Chambers. The public is invited to attend.

 How do I get a Mail-In Ballot?

The Clerk’s office can provide you with a Mail-In Ballot application which you mail to the County Clerk’s office. On that application you must indicate where you want your ballot to be mailed. The County Clerk must receive the application at least seven days prior to the election. If you applied for an absentee ballot you will not be allowed to vote at your normal polling place. Click here to obtain an application for a Vote by Mail Ballot (Mail-In Ballot) found on our Forms/Applications page.

How do I declare or change my political affilation?

If you are an undeclared voter you may declare your party affiliation at the polling place during a Primary Election. If you were previously a member of a party and wish to change that party affiliation you must do that with a “change of party” card that is available in the office of the Municipal Clerk. That card must be received in the County of Bergen 55 days prior to the Primary Election.

What is the purpose to licensing pets?

Pet licensing is done to avoid the spread of rabies.  An additional benefit of licensing your pets is that having a license helps to return them to their owners if they are lost.

When must dogs and cats be licensed?

Dog and cat licenses are renewed during the month of March due by March 31.

Licenses for new pets are issued by the Clerk's office throughout the year. Dogs 7 months of age or older and cats over 5 months of age must be licensed.

Do I need a permit for a garage sale?

Garage sales are permitted in the Borough. As per the Borough Code, a garage sale is defined as, “[a]ny sale entitled garage sale, lawn sale, attic sale, rummage sale, estate sale, flea market sale, or any other similar sale of used personal or household items held on the seller's premises, for purchase by third parties.”

There may not be more than two (2) garage sales per premises per calendar year, and cannot occur for more than two (2) consecutive days for each one. There is no fee or permit required for holding a garage sale.
