On May 4, the prohibition of single-use plastic bags and polystyrene foam food service products begins to help reduce the amount of plastic waste that has invaded our environment. “Plastics pollution has become one of the world’s most pressing environmental problems,” according to the head of New Jersey’s DEP.
There are exceptions to the ban on single-use plastic bags. Some items, such as bags for prescription medicine and delicatessen items can still be placed in plastic bags, and some stores can still provide paper bags, but shoppers must be prepared to have their own reusable bags.
The Plastic Bag Ban, although a sharp rupture in our daily routines, will help New Jersey GET PAST PLASTIC. We have learned to save energy. We are colder in the winter and warmer in the summer. We recycle with resignation and persistence. After Wednesday, we can take a deep breath knowing that our world is a healthier, safer place.
