November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

What is Pancreatic Cancer?

Pancreatic Cancer occurs when a malignant tumor forms in the pancreas. Worldwide there are an estimated 496,000 new cases each year.Pancreatic cancer affects men and women equally with incidence increasing from the age of 45. The average age at diagnosis is 75.

There are two main types of pancreatic cancer. Tumors that affect the exocrine glands, and ones that affect the endocrine glands.

The pancreas has two main jobs in the body:

  • It contains exocrine glands which create enzymes which help to digest food
  • It contains endocrine glands which create hormones such as insulin and glucagon, which control blood sugars.

There are therefore two main types of pancreatic cancer. Tumors that affect the exocrine glands, and ones that affect the endocrine glands.

On Saturday, November 5th we will be remembering and honoring War Eagle super fan Talath Witharane who recently passed of Pancreatic Cancer. Talath is the father of Juniors Football player Harry Witharane and Evyn Withrane of the Junior Cheer Coaching staff. Talath's positive smile and larger than life presence in the stands was a force to be reckoned with and this season has not been the same without him. During the last regular game of our War Eagle season we want to make his presence known by raising money for those warriors, survivors and those that have departed from Pancreatic Cancer by wearing and representing with purple in their honor. The Ordering Deadline is October 21st. Payments must be Cash to Kate Salzano (email salzanokate@gmail.com) or Venmo to @Katie-Salzano-1. All proceeds will go to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network as requested by the Witharane Family in Talath's name. Click here for all the info.
