Sikh Community Celebrates Vaisakhi

From Community Director

The Sikh community of Franklin Lakes, in partnership with Guru Nanak Mission Gurdwara in Oakland, recently welcomed volunteers participating in the Franklin Lakes Clean Up Day with a heartfelt Vaisakhi celebration rooted in service and community.

Vaisakhi is a significant holiday for Sikhs, marking the birth of the Sikh faith. In honor of this occasion, community members shared the spirit of the celebration by serving warm samosas, fresh fruit cups, bagels, coffee, and refreshing mango lassi to the clean-up volunteers.

Central to Sikhi are the values of seva (selfless service) and langar (the practice of a free, community kitchen open to all). By participating in the town’s clean-up initiative, the Sikh community brought these principles to life—creating a moment that was not only celebratory, but deeply meaningful

“Joining the Franklin Lakes Clean Up Day allowed the Sikh community to celebrate Vaisakhi in a way that truly reflects our values,” said Dr. Sandeep Singh the director of the Sikh Academy for Gurmat Education at Guru Nanak Mission Gurdwara. “It was an opportunity to give back, connect with our neighbors, and share a tradition of hospitality and service.”

The event highlighted the power of community collaboration and the importance of service across cultures. What began as a day of environmental stewardship became a shared celebration of generosity, inclusion, and gratitude.
