Update - Asbestos Remediation at Parsons Pond Road Development - 12/11/2025
Message from the Mayor
The Borough’s efforts to obtain information about the ongoing asbestos remediation at the SHG project site on Parsons Pond Road from the governmental agencies responsible for monitoring the project have continued since my last update. The following is an overview of the most recent developments:
- Congresswoman Nellie Pou’s office coordinated an information session on Friday, December 5, with Borough and school officials, and officials from four federal and state agencies with jurisdiction over the asbestos remediation at the site: United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”); New Jersey Department of Health Environmental & Occupational Health Assessment Program (“NJDOH”); New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (“NJDEP”); and New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (“NJDOL”).
- Representatives from Congresswoman Pou’s office as well as representative from the offices of Senator Corrado, Assemblyman DePhillips and Assemblyman Barlas attended.
- At this information session, the agencies each reported that the work at the site has been inspected is in compliance with federal and state requirements.
- The agencies reported that many inspections have taken place and the developer/contractor has not be cited for any violations. Most, if not all, of the inspections were unannounced.
- Inspections are for the purpose of assuring that work is being done in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- There was extended discussion on many topics, including: concerns with the pre-demolition environmental survey that had been provided, which was missing pages; the lack of records provided, particularly as compared to an asbestos remediation project in the same location a few years ago; and apparent discrepancies between documents. Efforts to obtain complete records are continuing.
- The Borough is awaiting responses to Open Public Records Act and Freedom of Information Act records requests from the EPA and NJDOH.
- The Borough’s Construction Official has issued a stop work order for work on the site because of work being done that is beyond the scope of work for which a permit has been issued. The developer/contractor has appealed the issuance of the stop work order to the Bergen County Construction Board of Appeals.
We will continue to keep you updated as more information and documentation is received.
