How do I dispose of paint cans?

Any oil or solvent based paint must be disposed of at the Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA) Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event. Special dates and collection sites are set up for Bergen County Residents free of charge (bring valid ID). Click here for additional information including a listing of dates and locations.
Water and latex paints - If the paint can is empty with no dried paint residue, it can be put in the commingled recycling. If there is dried paint residue in the can it should be placed in the garbage. If there is wet paint in the can it needs to be solidified using kitty litter or a commercially available paint hardener and then put in the garbage.
When putting paint cans in the garbage or recycling, do not put the lid back on the can. Paint cans with a lid on will not be collected. For questions, contact the Recycling Coordinator at 201-891-4333.
