FLFD Receives $234,000 Grant for New Radios

From the Franklin Lakes Volunteer Fire Department
The Borough of Franklin Lakes was recently notified that it was awarded a $234,000 federal grant for the purchase of new portable radios for the Franklin Lakes Volunteer Fire Department (“FLFD”).  The Assistance to Firefighters grant, provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will fund the replacement of all of the FLFD’s portable radios.

By awarding the grant, FEMA acknowledged the need to replace the FLFD’s obsolete portable radios.  This funding ensures that each seated position in every fire apparatus is equipment with a reliable portable radio.

This is the second grant under the FEMA Assistance to Firefighters grant program which has been awarded to the Borough in recent years.  In 2017, the Borough and the FLFD were awarded $624,000 for recruitment and retention purposes.  With that funding, the FLFD has revamped its website, implemented enhanced stipend programs for daytime response and for working shifts, initiated a comprehensive marketing program focused on social media marketing, implemented an innovative Tuition Assistance Program which funds college tuition for active members, and is in the process of retaining a recruitment and retention coordinator.  The goal of the recruitment and retention grant is to be able to maintain a sustainable volunteer workforce for many years to come.

Fire Chief Chuck Bohny commented, “The value of being awarded these two grants is tremendous. Not only will they provide us funding to replace all of our aging portable radios, they will give us the ability to implement different programs and incentives to attract new members at no cost to the Borough.”
