What if My Mailbox is Damaged by a Plow Truck?

If you live on a Borough road (not a County road) and your mailbox is damaged by a plow truck, you can call the Department of Public Works at 201-891-4333 to report the damage within three days of the snow event.  You will need to provide us with the following information:

Name
Address
Phone
Email
Mailbox Damage: box; post; box and post

A DPW crew will inspect the damage to the mailbox and determine if it needs to be repaired or replaced. A temporary box will be placed at the address immediately and replacement mailboxes will be installed in the Spring when the ground has thawed. Replacement mailboxes consist of a standard bullet-style mailbox (black or white) and a standard wooden post.
If you live on a County road, please contact the Bergen County Department of Public Works at 201-336-7680. 
 If you are not satisfied with the Borough replacing your mailbox with a standard mailbox, you can replace it yourself and the Borough will reimburse your costs up to $250.

Please inspect your mailbox before the snow starts falling. Too often, mailboxes are sticking out too far into the road (see diagram above) or they are not installed correctly or the posts are not in good condition. It is not always a plow that is the cause of your mailbox coming down.
