Below is a brief overview of the Borough's Department of Public Works, including a listing of their many day-to-day responsibilities.
The Franklin Lakes DPW is currently composed of 13 full-time employees and 1 part-time clerical assistant. The DPW is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all borough owned facilities, property and equipment.
Of The 13 full-time employees, the department is broken down to 1 Superintendent, 1 Assistant Superintendent/Working Foreman/Recycling Coordinator, 1 Mechanic and 10 Maintenance Men.

The departments day to day responsibilities include the following:
Emergencies – Residential & Complaints
Road Maintenance - pothole repairs / washout
Building Maintenance
Fleet Maintenance – 56 boro owned vehicles, landscape & misc equipment
Property Maintenance – lawn maintenance – 20 locations around the boro
Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve & Dam – inspections, maintenance & record keeping
Meetings, Education & Training
Snow Removal – 10 square miles of roads, 14 parking lots & 9 sidewalks
Street Sweeping -10 square miles x 2 (sweep both sides of roads), clean out over 2500 basins
Storm Water Management – basin repair & cleaning, stream cleaning, drain inlet labeling, inlet retrofitting, GPS mapping
Generator Air Quality – checked weekly
Sign Placement & Replacements – keep up with state regulations
Franklin Lakes Recreation Department – work & request – tennis courts, basketball, football turf fields, 12 baseball fields, 8 soccer fields, and 8 lacrosse fields
Athletic Fields Layout and Lining – for all sports
Town Sponsored Events – approximately 19 events annually

Vehicle Washing
Roadside Cutting & Litter Pick-Up – 13 locations
Recreation Fields Garbage/Recycling – pick up twice a week
General Housekeeping – garbage and recycling
Recycling pick-up at boro buildings – weekly
Battery Collection – pick up monthly from designated areas within the boro
Electronic Waste – pick up and disposal
Heavy Metal Pick Up – first Friday of every month and disposal
Playgrounds – inspect 3 playgrounds monthly and repair/maintain equipment for safety
Parks – inspection and maintenance of 4 parks
Tree trimming – maintain trees on boro property and paths
Memorial Pond Maintenance
Ponds and Paths – clean and maintain as necessary
Work with Police, Fire and Ambulance
Monthly Check – fire extinguishers, exit and emergency lights of all boro buildings
Mechanic
The mechanic is responsible for routine, preventative maintenance and repairs to all borough owned vehicles and equipment. Daily the mechanic does a routine maintenance check on police vehicles which includes checking all lights, tires, oil, trans oil, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid and any request the officer may have on the vehicle they are driving.
