Football

Franklin Lakes Football is unique among the other Recreation programs offered in that it incorporates a travel team within the overall program. Teams in this program play in the Northern Bergen Junior Football League (NBJFL). These teams are divided into two levels in the Mighty Mites, Pee Wee, Junior and Senior programs; A and B. The teams are structured as follows: Mighty Mites are for 2nd graders, Pee Wee teams are for 3rd and 4th graders, the Junior team consists of 5th and 6th graders and  the Senior team includes 7th and 8th graders. Typically, children will break up into the A and B levels based on their age, but there are exceptions based on skill and size.

Children at all four levels will play in games. Those at the B levels should play equal time, as much as that is possible up to and including half a game. Playing time in these games can vary due to the course of the game and the number of children on the team. Generally, playing time will balance out, but will not measure out exactly. However it is the responsibility of the coaching staff to make their best effort to equalize playing time.

The A program is the exception to this practice. This is the competitive team with the overall goal of winning a league championship. Playing time at this level is not specified other than a directive to provide equal play for children who can only play at this level. Players on this level are divided into two groups, beyond their position on the team. A number of these players are restricted to A game competition only and others can play at both the A and B levels. Players that don’t get time playing in the A game are entitled to play in the B game.

Flag Football
The Flag Football Program starts in September and is available to boys & girls entering Kindergarten or 1st grade in September. Players will learn the fundamentals of football in an organized and non-competitive atmosphere. All teams will play games on Saturday mornings for 7-8 weeks. Games and practices will be held on Pulis Ave Field in Franklin Lakes. Information regarding dates and times will be emailed in August. Players will receive a game shirt and are encouraged to wear comfortable athletic shorts, football cleats or sneakers.

Attendance

  • If a player has an unexcused absence from practices in a given week, the player may sit out a minimum of half of the next scheduled game.
  • If a player has two unexcused absences from practices in a given week, the player may not play in the next scheduled game.
  • Excused absences are those related to scholastic or religious commitments.
  • Injured players are expected to attend practices as observers.

Practices

During the preseason, practices will be held every evening – Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Occasionally, these days vary and a Friday practice is held in preparation of a Saturday or Sunday game. All players are expected to attend every practice session with pre-planned family vacations and illness being the only acceptable absence. During the season, the coaches will make players aware of the practice schedules via email or handout. Practices will be 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours in length. In order for practices to end on time, however, it is important that each player is ready to start on time.

Minimum Playing Time

Each player will play a minimum of two quarters per weekend except in the case where a player has missed two practices during the immediately preceding week.

Equipment

Each player is responsible for proper care of the equipment issued by the Recreation Department. Lost, broken or destroyed equipment must be replaced by the player or parent. Any player forgetting any part of their gear will not participate in practices or games - on the spot replacements will not be available.

Parental Responsibilites

Please remember that all of our coaches are volunteers who are putting in an enormous amount of time for the benefit of the players. Please give them your support. Until a coach from your child's level arrives for a practice or game, please do not drop your child off and leave them unattended under any circumstance. As coaches cannot leave a player unattended at a field after a practice or game, it is imperative that a dependable adult is available to assume responsibility of the child promptly at the conclusion of the team function.
